The Maharaja of Patiala, who had rendered valuable service to the British, was granted a lease of land in the area that is now Shimla. When the Gurkhas were defeated, they were forced to sign the “Sanjauli Treaty”. The Company retained the strongholds of Sabathu, Kotgarh, Ramgarh and Sandoch.
