Shillong, the capital of the state of Meghalaya, also known as the Scotland of the East, is one of the most popular tourist destinations in India. Located at an altitude of 4,990 feet above sea level, it is a perfect blend of unique culture and natural heritage. If one wants to see the beauty of North East, there are many places to visit in Shillong.

History of Shillong

The story of Shillong is also interesting and interesting. The city has gone through a great history. Until 1864, Shillong was not a large or well-developed place. Under the agreement after 1864, it was given the name as a new municipal corporation of two hills – the hills of Khasi and Jaintia. This hilly area was the central part of the former British state of Assam and continued to be the capital long after independence. Shillong remained for many years the tropical capital of Assam and East Bengal. But, unfortunately, the beautiful city was completely destroyed due to a major earthquake in 1897. After the restoration when Meghalaya was declared a separate state in January 1972, Shillong served as the capital and since then it has been one of the most beautiful capitals of India. According to a popular legend, Shillong got its name from the famous peak of “Shillong Peak”. But another story says that a man named “Shyllong” gave birth to a virgin mother in a village near Shilling named Bisi. Many locals say that he is the deity of Shillong. Hence, this beautiful mountain place got its name from this pious boy.

Welcome to the “Gleneagle of the East” – one of the largest natural golf courses in the world. Designed by the British, this 18-hole golf course is a challenge as you wind your way through beautiful rhododendron fairways and greens. Miraculously, the rain stopped when we got to the golf course and we lay on the grass to lie like cats in the sun.

Find butterflies in Lady Hydari Park

If butterflies and orchids are what you want, you don’t need to go far to Shillong. Another park in the center of town, this one is very different from Wards Lake. Founded by the wife of the first commissioner of Assam, Lady Hydari Park is not only fun for adults but also has many things for children. They have a small petting zoo and a small playground to keep them entertained while you spend some quiet time in the refreshing atmosphere of the park.

Get a bird’s eye view of Shillong Peak

Trek or Drive – totally your choice and both are beautiful. Climb to Shillong Birthplace for a 360° view of the city. Legend has it that Shillong is named after U Shyllong – a child born of a virgin mother. She seems to have given birth, and her mother left her in the garden. After a few years, a young man came to her and told her that he was the child she buried. He who protects the country, the place and the mountain tops answer to his name.

A museum dedicated to the life of the Indian tribes in the northeast, where you are given a great insight into the culture of the entire Indian region. It describes the places of residence, daily activities and the festivals that follow in these areas. Each floor is a mine of information. And once you complete each level, you can make yourself on the expressway which gives you the beautiful view of Shillong city.

Discover the unique churches of Shillong

The only thing that filled my camera memory card was the beautiful church of Shillong. Big or small, they are everywhere in the city and each one is better than the other. If I could have done better, I would have gone to different churches, but unfortunately it seems that time is running out. The only church we managed to see was the Cathedral of Mary Help of Christians. Located near Hydari Park, this church was the first wooden structure to be destroyed in the fire. The new church was built more than 50 years ago and is one of the most famous in Shillong

Water sports at Umiam Lake, Shillong

One of the main reasons for this is the Umiam lake or Barapani as it is called. While we were going from Guwahati to Shillong, while we were going to a hill side, a big blue sky looked down on us. Umiam Lake, as I found out, is a hot spot for anyone visiting Shillong – for its beauty and a little adrenaline rush. The lake is an artificial lake created by the damming project on the Umiam River. The lake has been around since the 1960s and is a popular spot for photography and day trips in Shillong. For people like me, it is good for this trip, because this is where you can go sailing, sailing or water skiing.
