The first inhabitants of the Florida Keys were indigenous people: Calusa and Tequesta. Juan Ponce de León, who arrived in Florida around 1513, was one of the first Europeans to discover and explore the islands. Native Americans defeated his attempt to rule the region for Spain.
Over time, Key West became the largest city in Florida because it was close to Cuba and the Bahamas and the trade route to New Orleans. In their early days, Key West and the Florida Keys were a major part of the region’s shipping industry – “companies” that took or “received” valuables from shipwrecks. This service is based on frequent landings in the area. In 1822, the Keys (along with the rest of Florida) became part of the United States government. By the early 1900s, however, Key West’s prosperity began to decline as improved navigation systems reduced the number of boats in the area. In 1935, one of the worst hurricanes ever hit the United States. On September 2, 1935, a hurricane of more than 200 kilometers per hour (320 kilometers per hour) hit the islands and they were quickly wiped out by rains of more than 17.5 feet (5.3 meters). The storm killed more than 500 people, and the international railway (built in 1910 to connect the islands) was damaged and stopped working. A highway, called the Overseas Highway, replaced the railroad as the mode of transportation in the area.
There are 800 islands in the Florida Keys, covering more than 180 miles. Today, there are different types of houses for rent or to buy in these islands. You can still see where some of the original people lived.

Key Largo is bordered by Everglades National Park on one side and the only living barrier in the continental United States on the other. A trip to the Everglades with a hiking or fishing charter reveals amazing wildlife your kids will never forget. A day trip by car to the Flamingo Outpost has a walking trail and a lookout point that offers spectacular views of the famous “River of Grass”.
The quiet streets and pedestrian paths of this area are full of nature. From the Blue Hole Lake lookout you can see waders, lots of waterfowl, iguanas and here around Big Pine we know the Key deer, the white tailed deer’s little cousin.
