Early History of Aspen
The Roaring Fork Valley was the ancestral home of the Ute people, who used it as a summer hunting ground. During the 1870s, the boom in mining attracted thousands of white settlers to Colorado’s West Slope, leading to conflict between whites and the Utes. These conflicts came to a head in the late 1870s, especially when Colorado gained statehood in 1876.
In 1880, the United States government forced the Ute people from western Colorado to a reservation in eastern Utah, allow for the expansion of white mining and processing. . . In the fall of 1878, the Hayden Geological Survey issued a report that stated the presence of promising geological formations, possibly containing silver and other valuable minerals, in the Roaring Fork Valley.
The windy prospectors of Hayden’s story braved the treacherous mountains to explore the valley in search of silver and claim what would be one of the richest veins of silver in history. As one of the first Americans to arrive in the Valley, Henry B. Gillespie established a permanent mining camp along the Roaring Fork in 1879. He called it Ute City.

Grottos Trail

Grottos Trail is great if you want a fun and rewarding hike near Aspen. Although it is only 1 km long, the route has many attractions along the way, and it is one of the most beautiful routes in the region. It is suitable for all hikers of moderate fitness – be aware that the Grottos Trail can be slippery when climbing over wet rocks.
Sturdy shoes and good grip are essential for conquering the journey. Also, we recommend arriving there early in the morning (before 9 am) or early in the morning (after 6 pm) because this route is very popular in this area. – Parking is limited.
